A life of faith, hope, and strength

Meet Christina Hammerly-Cowgill, a woman whose life beautifully encompasses the roles of daughter, sister, wife, mother, and cherished friend to many. Her journey with Leukemia ALM began on November 20th, 2023, a path marked by an unwavering spirit fueled by her deep faith, remarkable strength, and an enduringly positive attitude. Throughout the trials she faced, Christina remained a beacon of grace, never succumbing to anger, complaint, or the question of “why me?”

Christina’s inner fortitude and persistent optimism have served as a profound source of encouragement for those around her, touching even the dedicated medical professionals at Huntsman Medical Center in Utah. For instance, while many patients understandably place their trust solely in prescribed treatment plans, Christina approached her journey with a fierce determination to live. Approximately a month into her treatment, when faced with the difficult suggestion of hospice, Christina’s determined spirit stood out. With unwavering conviction, she declared to her doctor, “I am not ready to die; I have four boys. You go figure this out.” This powerful affirmation of life ignited a collaborative spirit, leading her physician to explore innovative options, ultimately resulting in a test drug that played a significant role in her remarkable longevity.

At the very core of Christina’s strength lies her profound faith in God. This spiritual anchor has been her constant source of courage, peace, and unwavering hope throughout her battle. Her journey serves as a powerful testament to the strength that faith can provide, offering a profound life lesson in trusting a higher power during times of immense adversity.

During a phone conversation with Christina a few months ago while she was at Huntsman, I asked what advice or guiding wisdom she has for others navigating a similar path, her response was immediate and unwavering: “Trust in God.” With heartfelt conviction, she added, “Unfortunately, many people in these situations don’t know or believe in God, placing all their faith solely in the medical system. My constant prayer is for everyone to witness God’s grace.”

Her practical advice continued with a powerful emphasis on mindset: “It’s crucial not to internalize the fear that this will be fatal. You have to actively cultivate positivity. Depression can easily take hold, so you must intentionally seek out sources of hope.” And then, with a characteristic humor nature, she said while laughing loud, “Charles, you should see the hair on my legs! It’s like Sasquatch hair – you could practically braid it!” That perfectly encapsulates the wonderfully humorous spirit that defines Christina.

Christina’s story illustrates that even in the face of life-threatening illness, maintaining a positive attitude, fueled by faith and an indomitable spirit, can inspire not only oneself but also those who witness it. Her refusal to surrender to despair and her active participation in her own fight offer a powerful message: strength is not merely the absence of weakness, but the unwavering presence of hope and the courage to advocate for life, guided by faith and love.

Unfortunately, on April 20th, 2025, Easter Sunday, she passed peacefully in her mom’s house. While the grief of loss is undeniable, the timing of Christina’s passing on Easter Sunday offers a framework of faith and hope. Connecting her journey with the central miracle of their belief system, finding comfort in the promise of resurrection and eternal life that this sacred day represents. It serves as a reminder that even in death, there can be a profound connection to the enduring themes of hope, faith, and the ultimate victory over mortality celebrated on Easter.

Rest in Peace, my friend, I was blessed to have known you and called you not just a friend but my first family when I moved to Rock Springs WY.
