Beyond the Game – Servant Leadership

Often when we envision a basketball team, our attention naturally gravitates towards the players, those in the spotlight on the court. However, behind the scenes, countless individuals contribute significantly, often without recognition.

Meet Galeno, aka G, the manager for the Rock Springs Tigers’ 2024-2025 Sophomore, JV, and Varsity teams. Though basketball was not his primary sport, he always had love for the game and that led him to bravely decide to try out for an opportunity to play for the Tigers. Despite not making the team partly because it was his first sports tryout since moving to Rock Springs a year ago, he eagerly and wholeheartedly accepted the manager role for the team. This decision was driven by a genuine desire to serve others.

G’s dedication transcends the typical manager duties of keeping stats and assisting the team. He consistently goes above and beyond that. He’s the first to greet players during timeouts and substitutions. He’s always on the court, enthusiastically warming up alongside the team and always cheering the team on through wins and losses. His genuine smile and unwavering encouragement are a constant source of inspiration.

As Ronald Reagan eloquently stated, ‘the greatest leader is not necessarily the one who does the greatest things. He is the one that assists others to do the greatest things. This is exactly what G embodies. He prioritizes the needs of the players above his own desire to play the game, while simultaneously learning and growing within his environment.

G’s dedication as a basketball manager offers a powerful metaphor for life. His willingness to serve, despite not being a player, underscores the importance of finding purpose in supporting others. His journey, from a baseball enthusiast to a dedicated basketball manager, highlights the value of adaptability and embracing new opportunities. Just as he investing time to learn the game from the sidelines and the players, we too can grow and find our place by observing, supporting, and contributing, even when we’re not in the spotlight.

Mahatma Gandhi believed that the best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others. G exemplifies this philosophy. While serving the team, he has immersed himself in the game of basketball, studying it from the sidelines and learning from the older players and coaching staff. His dream is to be on the court playing alongside his mentor’s and fellow teammates next season.

G aspires to attend Liberty University in Virginia to pursue a degree in mathematics after high school. His ambition is to become a sports statistical analyst.

When I asked the head coach, Spence Lennon about G, he responded “He was someone who was willing to do whatever it took in order for the team to succeed. What made him even more valuable is the fact that he is extremely knowledgeable about basketball and that was very helpful for me in that regard. I’m excited to see “G” in a different role and that is by being on the court and playing with us this summer, with an opportunity at making the basketball team next season. His efforts have been greatly appreciated with us and I’m excited to see his future.”

G’s story and journey during the season reminds us that true success often lies in quiet contributions, selfless service, and the unwavering commitment to the team, both on and off the court.
